About Augustana College:
Augustana College is a private, selective, residential liberal arts and sciences college with an enrollment of approximately 2,500 students. Our scenic 115-acre campus is located in Rock Island, Illinois, part of the Quad Cities metropolitan area along the Mississippi River, about 165 miles west of Chicago. The Quad Cities region has a population of approximately 450,000.
Augustana offers Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees in nearly 100 majors and related academic programs, as well as a Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology . The Position:
The Department of Environment, Geography, and Geoscience at Augustana College invites applications for a Tenure-Track Assistant or Associate Professor in Environmental GIS to begin in February or August 2026. The ideal candidate will be trained in Geographic Information Systems, with strong preference given to those specializing in environmental science and with experience in community-based applications of GIS.
Responsibilities:
- Teach undergraduate courses in areas such as Introduction to Geographic Information Systems, cartography, advanced GIS courses, and introductory environmental studies or geology courses, with opportunities to design courses aligned with your expertise.
- Carry a teaching load of 24 credits per 10-month academic year (standard courses are 2 or 4 credits).
- Develop engaged learning opportunities for students through courses, research, and community partnerships that incorporate GIS.
- Maintain software and hardware necessary for courses in the GIS curriculum, including cartography, remote sensing, drone mapping, and advanced geospatial analytics.
- Actively contribute to the inclusive and innovative teaching practices that define Augustana's learning environment.
Requirements
What We're Looking For:
- Strengths in teaching effectiveness and commitment to community- and field-based teaching and GIS applications.
- Expertise with software and hardware used in GIS and remote sensing, and experience teaching and conducting research using GIS and remote sensing analysis.
- Ability developing community partnerships that incorporate GIS and geospatial technologies
- Experience fostering inclusion and belonging in the classroom and broader campus community.
- A Ph.D. or near completion in Geography, Environmental Studies or Sciences, Geology, or a related field.

Additional Information
The budgeted compensation for this position ranges from $60,000 to $64,000 per year based upon minimum and preferred qualifications, education, experience, skills, and abilities. Actual placement within the range will depend upon experience, education, research, rank, and other relevant factors.
