- Assistant Professor (Tenure Track) - Organic Chemistry - Fall 2026
Description
The Department of Physical and Environmental Sciences at Commonwealth University of Pennsylvania (CU) invites applications for a full-time tenure track position in Organic Chemistry at the rank of Assistant Professor, beginning August 2026. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate organic chemistry lecture and labs, as well as other undergraduate chemistry courses as needed by the department. We are seeking a student-centered educator to join our primarily undergraduate institution and engage undergraduate students in the classroom, teaching laboratory, and in their scientific research.
The home campus for this position is the Bloomsburg campus with the expectation of serving a multi-campus University within the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. Faculty teach 24 contact hours per year, with lab and lecture hours being equivalent.
About the Department: The Department of Physical and Environment Sciences department features approximately 45 faculty that teach in the areas of biochemistry and chemistry, physics and engineering, and environmental sciences. Our chemistry program offers B.A. and B.S. options and the Bloomsburg campus was recently ranked #8 by Washington Monthly as “Best Colleges for Women in STEM.” Some chemistry tracks are approved by the American Chemical Society (ACS) and some accredited by the American Society of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology (ASBMB). The department emphasizes hands-on laboratory experiences and requires students to conduct research or an internship. Key instrumentation at the Bloomsburg campus includes a 400 MHz broadband NMR, FTIRs, Quadrupole GC-MS, single crystal and powder diffractometer, multiple UV/Vis capabilities, Craic microspectrophometer, and gloveboxes. We have a strong record of student admission to graduate, medical, and dental schools, as well as industry placement metrics.
About the College: Physical and Environmental Sciences is one of seven departments in the College of Health, Science, and Technology at CU. Duties:
- Teach and develop undergraduate organic chemistry courses/laboratories.
- Teach other chemistry courses as assigned by the department.
- Develop a research lab in organic chemistry that encourages undergraduate involvement.
- Participate in service activities that support the University mission, vision and values.
- Advise undergraduate students in different chemistry tracks.
The successful candidate will need to complete distance education training programs as made available by the University within two years of hire for the purpose of teaching in a multi-campus environment with remote teaching needs.
Requirements
Minimum Qualifications:
- Ph.D., or ABD, in Chemistry (or closely related field) with strong expertise in organic chemistry.
- Experience teaching organic chemistry (or closely related) lectures and/or labs to undergraduates.
- Plan for scholarly endeavors that engage undergraduate students
- Demonstrated strong verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills
- Demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations
