The Prairie Research Institute (PRI) is a research and service institute of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. PRI is seeking to hire an Associate Director for Strategic Communications and Engagement to play a key leadership role in shaping and advancing the Institute’s internal and external communications and engagement strategy and is responsible for enhancing the PRI’s visibility, reputation, and engagement with legislatures, non-legislative stakeholders, researchers, including faculty, within and outside the university, and leadership teams on our campus and U of I systems. The Associate Director will manage the Institute’s communications and engagement efforts, including media relations, public affairs, digital and social media outreach, and strategic partnerships. Requirements
Required: Master’s degree in public relations, journalism, or other communications field. Alternative degree fields will be considered/accepted if accompanied by equivalent experience (depending on nature and depth of experience as it relates to relevant PRI technologies and projects). A minimum of eight years of experience in strategic communications, including writing and editing, public relations, and web presence with a thorough knowledge of current media technologies and how they apply to information distribution. Minimum of 4 years of experience in coordinating public or external relations plans, policies, and implementation of strategies. Preferred:. Experience working in a not-for-profit, higher education or other public institution. Scientific background.
Knowledge Requirements: Proven ability to effectively engage with various stakeholders, including Legislatures, non-legislative stakeholders, researchers, including faculty, within and outside the university, and leadership teams in our campus and U of I systems. Demonstrates exceptional oral and written communication skills, with a strong record of preparing clear, concise reports and presentations, and delivering them effectively to senior management and a variety of stakeholders. Recognized for outstanding interpersonal skills, a deep understanding of group dynamics, and a consistent ability to establish credibility and trust with diverse client groups. Brings demonstrated leadership and management capabilities, coupled with strong analytical, critical thinking, creative problem-solving, and strategic decision-making skills. Adept in negotiation and influencing, with sound judgment and the ability to navigate complex relationships. Maintains the highest standards of confidentiality, tact, and diplomacy in all interactions. Interest and understanding of AI and emerging technologies towards to support enterprise scale communications and engagement operations.
