Epsilon Systems is seeking a Biological Field Technician to support field collection of environmental data and potential species monitoring throughout New Mexico. The role involves supporting federal, state, and tribal agency projects through field surveys, habitat documentation, and data management related to flora, fauna, and threatened and endangered species, wetland habitat, and sensitive ecosystems.
Job Summary:
The Biological Field Technician will assist with field-based surveys and data collection across various regions of New Mexico. This position supports environmental compliance and natural resource assessments by collecting biological, habitat, and geospatial data related to baseline project area data as well as any rare, threatened, and endangered species. The role involves hiking in remote, rugged terrain, identifying native flora and fauna, and documenting habitat characteristics. Technicians will work closely with Epsilon staff biologists to ensure data accuracy, regulatory compliance, and high-quality deliverables for federal, state, and tribal partners. This is a field-focused position that requires adaptability, attention to detail, and a strong interest in conservation biology and field ecology.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Conduct field surveys for existing conditions as well as rare, threatened and endangered species (plants, insects, and wildlife), wetlands in accordance with US Army Corps of Engineers, USFWS, Bureau of Land Management, New Mexico Department of Transportation, New Mexico Department of Game and Fish protocols, and any other relevant agency requirements.
Collect biological and environmental data in various ecoregions including grasslands, riparian corridors, desert scrub, and montane woodlands.
Utilize GPS and GIS (e.g., ArcGIS, ArcMap) for mapping survey points, habitats, and observed species.
Document habitat conditions and species occurrences; photograph and describe site conditions.
Support NEPA, ESA Section 7, and Clean Water Act Section 404/401 documentation by providing field data and technical input.
Prepare concise field notes, species identification forms, and contribute to biological reports.
Maintain and clean field equipment, follow data collection quality control procedures.
Coordinate with team leads, agency biologists, and tribal representatives as needed.
Ability to drive to and from work sites.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, Wildlife Science, or a related field.
Minimum 1 year of related experience.
Valid driver's license.
Field experience in New Mexico habitats.
Ability to collect accurate data independently and under supervision in a variety of outdoor conditions.
Basic familiarity with ESA-listed species in New Mexico.
Strong attention to detail and scientific documentation practices.
Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
Pay Range:
The pay range for this role is $22 to $24 Per Hour. This is a reasonable estimate for this role. Individual salaries are determined by a variety of factors including, but not limited to: business considerations, local market conditions, and internal equity, as well as candidate qualifications, such as skills, education, and experience.
ADA Notations:
Must be able to hike a minimum of 10 miles per day with a backpack (up to 25 lbs) while carrying sufficient water and gear.
Fieldwork often requires exposure to high summer temperatures, rapid weather changes, and rugged to extremely rugged terrain.
Willingness to travel to remote locations with limited cell service and work long days in the field.
Some office-based tasks will be required for data processing or reporting.
