Position Summary:
Fort Lewis College’s Reed Library seeks a dynamic, detail-oriented, and service-minded Cataloging Librarian to join our team. This position blends original and copy cataloging—including for culturally sensitive, rare, and special collections—with instruction, reference, and liaison responsibilities in support of academic departments. The cataloger will spend approximately 50% of their time supporting metadata and cataloging needs at Reed Library and at the Center of Southwest Studies, a cultural heritage center on campus. The other 50% of the position will be dedicated to serving as a liaison librarian, supporting information literacy, research, and collection development in assigned departments.
Job Description:
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
Cataloging & Metadata (50%)
- Perform original and copy cataloging of materials in multiple formats using MARC21, RDA, LCSH, LC classification, and other relevant standards.
- Create and maintain metadata for rare books and special collections, including items from the Center of Southwest Studies.
- Apply best practices for rare materials description (e.g., DCRM, RBMS), ensuring ethical and respectful treatment of culturally sensitive materials.
- Collaborate with library and Center staff on metadata for digitized and born-digital materials.
- Conduct authority control and metadata quality assurance across systems.
- Supervise and train student employees involved in physical processing tasks such as labeling, barcoding, and item preparation.
- Document cataloging workflows, contribute to internal training, and support metadata clean-up or system migration projects.
Liaison, Instruction, and Research Services (50%)
- Serve as liaison librarian to assigned academic departments, building relationships with faculty and supporting curricular needs.
- Design and deliver information literacy instruction within liaison departments, both in person and online, aligned with the ACRL Framework.
- Provide research support to students, faculty, and staff members through consultations, Reed Library reference desk shifts, email, and chat.
- Manage library materials for assigned subject areas, including making selections for purchasing and weeding resources.
Engage in outreach to promote library services, resources, and collections. - Stay informed on trends in scholarly communication, open access, and library instruction.
General
- Maintains knowledge and awareness of digital accessibility including the American with Disabilities Act and Section 508.
- Produces and remediates digitally accessible materials in accordance with FLC standards.
- Perform other duties as assigned
Requirements
Required Education, Specialized Skills and Experience:
ALA-accredited master’s degree in library and information science (MLIS) or equivalent.
Minimum of 1 years professional experience with original and copy cataloging using national standards.
Familiarity with cataloging special collections or rare materials.
Experience or interest in working with rare or culturally significant collections, especially in a regional or Indigenous context.
Strong organizational, analytical, and communication skills.
Demonstrated ability to work independently, take initiative, and manage time effectively in a dynamic and evolving work environment.
Demonstrated ability to quickly learn new technologies.
Preferred Education, Specialized Skills and Experience:
Knowledge of non-MARC metadata schemas (e.g., Dublin Core, MODS, EAD).
Demonstrated teaching, liaison, or reference experience in an academic or research library.
Supervisory experience, especially with student workers or interns.
Awareness of emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), and their potential applications in cataloging, metadata creation, and discovery systems.
Reports To / Supervisory Responsibility:
Reports to the Reed Library Director. Student employees may report to this position.
Work Environment:
Moderate noise (i.e. business office with computers, phone, and printers, light traffic).
Ability to work in a confined area.
Ability to sit at a computer terminal for an extended period of time.
Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to, stand, sit; talk, hear, and use hands and fingers to operate a computer and telephone keyboard reach, stoop kneel to install computer equipment.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision requirements due to computer work.
Light to moderate lifting is required.
Requires some physical activity, such as handling materials and moving carts or boxes.
Travel:
Occasional travel to conferences or other professional development activities. On-campus moving between Reed Library and Center of Southwest Studies.

Salary
The salary for this position is $58,000 to $60,000, plus a comprehensive benefits package
