- Chair, Department of Neurosciences
Description
Cleveland Clinic invites applications for the position of Chair, Department of Neurosciences, within Cleveland Clinic Research. This position offers the chance to shape a globally recognized research program that drives innovation in brain health and neurological disease.
The Department of Neurosciences currently comprises 20 independent laboratories and more than 190 research members focused on understanding brain development, function and disease. With expertise spanning neuronal activity and advanced imaging, cerebrospinal fluid biology, immunity and microglia, the department is at the forefront of discoveries in neurodevelopmental, psychiatric, cognitive and neurodegenerative disorders. The research portfolio addresses critical questions such as how cerebrospinal fluid and dura-associated lymphatic brain tissue contribute to central nervous system disease; how imaging and neuromodulation technologies can improve the diagnosis and treatment of brain disorders; and how microglia and innate immunity affect conditions including multiple sclerosis, autism, Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease. Investigators also lead work to mitigate the impact of chronic inflammation and immune responses on the central nervous system, while developing biomarkers and novel delivery methods to support clinical trials and advance neurotherapeutic care. This work is supported by unique Cleveland Clinic resources, including our pioneering Rapid Autopsy Program with the Mellen Center for Multiple Sclerosis. In 2024, the department held $13.3 million in active external funding. The department also maintains a strong commitment to education and mentorship, currently training more than 120 postdoctoral fellows, graduate and undergraduate students.
This is a central and critical role for Cleveland Clinic globally and in the Cleveland Innovation District. Applicants must hold an MD and/or PhD degree with a distinguished national/international record of scholarship and significant administrative experience, including mentorship of students, trainees, fellows, and faculty of diverse research backgrounds. The successful candidate will present a compelling strategic vision for the future role of the department within the research and broader medical environments. The Chair will guide a multidisciplinary team of faculty, trainees and administrative staff and will oversee operations across Cleveland Clinic’s global locations. A key part of the role is close integration with Cleveland Clinic’s clinical institutes, particularly the Neurological Institute, to accelerate the translation of discovery into practice.
The Chair of Neurosciences will report to the Chief of Cleveland Clinic Research and will hold a Full Staff position (equivalent to Full Professor), with a joint appointment in the Neurological Institute and a faculty appointment at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University, at a rank commensurate with experience.
Kindly submit your application by October 15, 2025.

About Cleveland Clinic Research
Cleveland Clinic has operated for over 100 years on the principle of bringing innovative teams together to advance care for patients. Today, we are a world leader in science-based healthcare. Our strategic plan for research harnesses information technology to power significant advances in both personalized and population medicine. A major component of our strategy includes our anchor role in building the Cleveland Innovation District. This unprecedented collaboration includes participation and investment by the State of Ohio along with five independent Cleveland healthcare and academic institutions and is designed to transform research, education and economic opportunities in Northeast Ohio, the United States, and across the world.
Cleveland Clinic’s research footprint spans one million square feet in Cleveland and Florida, with two new state-of-the-art facilities scheduled to open in 2025 and 2026. In 2024, research funding grew to $520 million — including $176 million in federal funding and 632 federal awards. In addition, Cleveland Clinic’s global footprint provides a wealth of resources to support research throughout the enterprise, including at our locations in Northeast Ohio, Florida, London and Abu Dhabi.
Cleveland Clinic’s global locations engage with a large, growing and diverse patient population, giving our research teams access to tens of thousands of unique biological samples through the centralized Cleveland Clinic BioRepository. Cleveland Clinic’s Discovery Accelerator partnership with IBM leverages high-performance computing using hybrid cloud, artificial intelligence (AI) and quantum computing technologies to empower and accelerate big data research, with more than 60 research projects in progress. The Center for Therapeutic Discovery provides full-scale drug discovery efforts to identify new drug targets and therapeutic compounds. All these efforts ultimately coordinate with Cleveland Clinic Innovations, the technology commercialization team serving to transform our discoveries into clinical practice.
About the Neurological Institute
Cleveland Clinic’s Neurological Institute is a national leader in the care and research of neurological and psychiatric disorders, uniting more than 300 experts across neurology, neurosurgery, psychiatry and related fields.
The institute is dedicated to the advancement of patient care through clinical trials and research, with more than 100 active clinical trials and a robust research program. Physicians and scientists collaborate closely with Cleveland Clinic Research to accelerate discoveries from the lab to the bedside. Major research initiatives include Cleveland Clinic’s Brain Study – a landmark longitudinal study exploring how neurodegenerative diseases develop, with the goal of identifying changes in the brain and body before symptoms arise.
This work will be further supported by a new one-million-square-foot neurological building, currently under construction on Cleveland Clinic’s main campus, which will unite outpatient care, inpatient services, research and education under one roof. Designed to support patients with complex neurological conditions, the building will feature advanced technologies such as AI-enabled monitoring, wearable sensors and a digitized assessment center that captures gait, speech and cognitive data before clinical visits. Its integrated layout brings clinical and research teams together in shared, technology-rich spaces to accelerate personalized care and discovery.
