What Your Job Will Be Like
We are seeking a highly motivated R&D Computer Scientist to serve as an engineer and architect for a multidisciplinary team focused on delivering high-impact national security systems. The successful candidate will design and develop solutions in the areas of information technology, hyper converged infrastructure, security architectures, network engineering, and software architectures. They will develop solutions to complex problems that require the frequent use of creativity, analysis, and out of the box thinking to solve some of our nation's most critical security needs. Our organization specializes in software feature development, machine learning, analytics, algorithm development and data analysis. The successful candidate will initially focus on development related to high-consequence imaging, processing, and other similar projects.
On any given day, you will be asked to:
- Develop software for enterprise and national security applications, including high consequence missions.
- Plans, conceives, conducts, or manages research and development for Sandia's customers and sponsors.
- Directs systematic study toward a fuller knowledge or understanding of the fundamental aspects of phenomena and of observable facts and discovers new approaches to achieve goals.
- Creates new understandings and capabilities by using the scientific method's hypothesis, test, and evaluation techniques; critical review; or similar engineering research and development methods.
- Initiates, designs, develops, executes, and evaluates new processes, products, or systems through basic and applied research.
- Uses engineering principles to research, design, or develop structures, instruments, machines, experiments, processes, systems, theories, or technologies; to construct or operate the same with full cognizance of their design; or to forecast their behavior under specific operating conditions.
- Participate in Agile and incremental development frameworks, ceremonies, and planning.
- Undertakes creative work, making systematic use of investigation or experimentation, to discover or revise knowledge of reality, and uses this knowledge to devise new applications.
- Follow project quality coding expectations and standards.
- Utilize wide knowledge of concepts in a specialized field.
- Conduct independent technical projects or scientific research.
- Provide technical consultation or advice to staff and immediate management.
Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.
Salary Range
$114,000 - $227,500
*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.
Qualifications We Require
- A Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline and five (5) years of directly relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.
- Active DOE Q-level or DOD equivalent security clearance. The position may likely require higher-level clearance, which may require a polygraph test.
Qualifications We Desire
The ideal R&D S&E, Computer Science candidate for Sandia National Laboratories will in addition possess the following:
- Graduate degree in Computer Science or a highly related field where an independent research project was a graduation requirement (e.g., independent project, thesis, or dissertation).
- Demonstrated software development skills and familiarity with modern software development practices and tools (e.g., Agile).
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams, and a passion to improve and expand technical skills.
Also, for this posting we are seeking individuals with the following experience:
- Large data systems processing development.
- Common AI or machine learning libraries.
- Four or more years development experience with object-oriented software development in C++, Java, or Python
- Experience with automation, orchestration, continuous integration/ continuous delivery including such tools as Ansible, Puppet, Docker, GitLab CI, Jenkins, Nexus, etc.
- Experience with common software architectures (e.g., microservices, distributed architecture models, etc.)
- Experience with container technologies, using tools such as Docker, Kubernetes, etc.
- Experience reading, interpreting, writing, modifying, and executing scripts (e.g., Python, Bash, PowerShell) on Windows or Unix systems
- Experience with virtual machines and cloud technologies (e.g., Microsoft Hyper-V, VMWare vSphere, Open Stack, AWS, Azure, etc.)
- Knowledge of secure configuration management techniques (e.g., STIGs) and secure software development and deployment practices
- Skill in identifying measures or indicators of system performance and the actions needed to improve or correct performance, availability, capacity, or configuration problems relative to the goals of the system
- Experience developing, testing, troubleshooting, and deploying large-scale systems for managing, processing, and disseminating data from disparate data sources
- Experience with large, multi-organizational, multi-discipline projects with emphasis on satellite or other aerospace systems
- Ability to travel on occasion
About Our Team
The System and Environments Engineering Department is a capability based organization that architects, develops, integrates, tests, and deploys large highly reliable mission critical systems using the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe). We have expertise in R&D and Information Technology across many disciplines including large-scale software engineering, computer science, and computer engineering. Our specific capabilities include computer hardware/software architectures, system administration/networking, cyber security, failover/redundancy, continuous integration, system integration/verification, and performance assessment. We leverage these capabilities to innovate high-rigor solutions while supporting existing critical customer needs. Our current responsibility includes support for nonproliferation and national security missions for the US Nuclear Detonation Detection System.
Posting Duration

Security Clearance
Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD). Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.
Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs
If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.
