What Your Job Will Be Like
The High Energy Density Material Physics Group (1640) is seeking a dynamic manager for the Dynamic Material Properties Department (1646). This role focuses on experimental research and development in the fields of dynamic compression science and high-pressure material physics. Work in the department includes experimental efforts at gas gun facilities, the largest pulsed power machine in the world: the Z Machine, and national platforms including the Omega laser facility, the National Ignition Facility, and at x-ray light sources. Research and development within the department is focused on national security material physics applications. The Department 1646 manager will work with the 1640 management team and staff to set technical directions and priorities of our research program in high-pressure physics as well as develop collaborations within Sandia and external customers. This role will also involve management of the Dynamic Material Properties sub-program within the Assessment Science ' Office of Experimental Science (OES), National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) portfolio.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee and inspire a highly creative team of workforce members, including responsibilities for hiring, professional development, and performance management.
- Ensure a culture that promotes safety, security, and operational and scientific excellence.
- Oversee activity-level work at several gas gun and pulsed power experimental research facilities for dynamic material properties research, including work on Special Nuclear Materials (SNM).
- Partner with other organizations at Sandia (facilities, engineering, and research) to assure safe and effective experimental activities.
- Provide leadership and coordination of the department's research and operational activities.
- Integrate and advocate for the department's research within the Center, Sandia, and national and international dynamic compression communities.
- Manage Sandia's Dynamic Material Properties sub-program with the NNSA-OES programs.
- Act as a visible advocate for Sandia's existing programs within national and international communities; develop new national security efforts that leverage Sandia's unique experimental capabilities in dynamic materials experiments; and cultivate relationships with customers, other national laboratories, universities, and industry partners.

- Experience working under or managing NNSA defense programs or National Security projects
- A demonstrated history of technical innovation
- Active DOE Q clearance
About Our Team
The Dynamic Materials Properties Department at Sandia National Laboratories (Department 1646) performs experimental measurements of dynamic material properties at high pressures, including material's equations of state, phase boundaries, and transport and constitutive properties. Experiments are performed with a variety of drivers, from diamond anvil cells to high velocity gas guns to the most powerful pulsed-power facility in the world, the 26 million ampere Z facility. The focus of the department is dynamic material properties experiments using both high-pressure shock waves and shockless compression as well as the development, implementation, and application of new material physics diagnostics. Initiatives within the department range from basic science to highly applied national security missions. The department is responsible for designing, executing, diagnosing, and analyzing dynamic materials properties experiments on the Z facility, and at Sandia National Laboratories Dynamic Integrated Compression Experimental (DICE) and Shock Thermodynamic Applied Research (STAR) facilities. The department works closely with two other departments, HEDP Theory (1641) and Solid Dynamics Experiments (1647), a part of the HED Material Physics Group (1640), in turn a part of the Pulsed Power Sciences Center (1600).
Posting Duration
This posting will be open for application submissions for a minimum of seven (7) calendar days, including the ‘posting date’. Sandia reserves the right to extend the posting date at any time.
Security Clearance
Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.
Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.
EEO
All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, or veteran status and any other protected class under state or federal law.
NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs
If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.
If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.
