Description
The Part-Time Instructor, Surgical Technology provides accessible, quality learning experiences within the classroom, laboratory, and/or distance learning settings; facilitates the learning process to help students be successful; seeks professional development opportunities to implement best practices in teaching within the discipline area; and completes required course assessments and documentation in an accurate and timely manner. This position is responsible for completing required paperwork, care of equipment and material, and the ability to comply with all CCC&TI policies and procedures.
Examples of Duties
Essential responsibilities and other duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Essential Functions:
Provide classroom/laboratory/clinical instruction to students.
Provide supervisor with objectives and course outlines for each class; begin and end each class on time; turn in reports, final grades, and other forms on time.
Maintain accurate records and submit corresponding reports according to departmental and college policies.
Assist in the evaluation of activities and operations of the assigned program; ensure that operations meet the goals and objectives of the college and the needs of the student population.
Marginal Functions:
Participate in staff development programs, workshops, seminars, and other continuing education programs as appropriate.
Support college functions/cultural activities; assist in the placement of students.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Working Conditions
Knowledge of:
Principles and techniques of classroom instruction
Practices of instructional development and instructional strategies
Distance learning instruction
Current trends, research, and development in the areas of assignment.
Principles of record keeping
Safe workplace practices and procedures
The mission, goals, and objectives of CCC&TI.
Ability to:
Establish and maintain productive working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
Work independently in the absence of supervision
Follow all safety rules and regulations of the department
Understand and follow oral and written instructions
Communicate effectively with co-workers and students
Provide support to students
Provide clinical and lab instruction to students
Represent the college in a positive and professional manner
Environmental Conditions:
The instructor should have the ability to effectively handle a work environment and conditions which involve an office, lab, clinical, and classroom workspace.
The instructor must maintain the office and teaching environments by maintaining equipment and supplies, ensuring overall cleanliness, functionality, and conformance to OSHA standards to provide a safe work environment.
Physical Conditions:
Physical and marginal functions require the ability to maintain physical conditions appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities, which may include the following: standing, walking, or sitting for extended periods, moderate lifting and carrying, general manual dexterity, operating assigned equipment, and extended exposure to computer screens.
The instructor is required to maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for making observations, reading and writing, operating assigned equipment, communicating with others, and handling varied tasks simultaneously.
Additionally, the instructor must maintain mental capacity, which permits making sound decisions and using good judgment, demonstrating intellectual capabilities, and evaluating the effectiveness of programs and personnel.
Scheduling Conditions:
This is a part-time position, with availability of contract hours and scheduling (day/evening/online) dependent on enrollment needs each semester.
Traveling Conditions:
Local travel between the Caldwell campus, Watauga campus, or any off-campus sites may be needed.
Experience and Training
Experience:
A minimum of three years of experience in the operating room scrub role is required.
Five years of experience, either in the operating room scrub role or as an instructor in surgical technology, or a combination of both, within the past ten years is preferred.
Training:
A high school diploma or equivalency and a current nationally recognized Surgical Technology Certification is required.
An associate degree in Surgical Technology is preferred.
