About School of Bioengineering
The School of Bioengineering focuses on research directions including biocatalysis and biotransformation, synthetic and systems biology, biomedicine and biomaterials, and biological target and biomolecular engineering. The school has established distinctive strengths in areas of bioenergy and bio-based chemicals, biomedical materials, marine biotechnology, and product engineering. Over the past five years, the school has won five state and province-level science & technology awards, undertaken over 100 research projects from funding agencies such as National Key Research and Development Program and National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), as well as more than 10 industrial projects, with total research funding exceeding 120 million RMB. The school has secured over 200 authorized invention patents, published a series of high-impact papers on Nature-series and other top-tier journals, and successfully translated advanced technologies into industrial applications. The school hosts several ministry and province-level laboratories, including the Key Laboratory of Intelligent Biomanufacturing (Ministry of Education), the Liaoning Provincial Key Laboratory of Molecular Recognition and Imaging, the Liaoning Provincial Key Laboratory of Protein Modification and Disease Pathogenesis, and the Liaoning Provincial Demonstration Center for Experimental Biology Education. The school also has a postdoctoral research station in bioengineering, a national key discipline in biochemical engineering, a doctoral program in the primary discipline of bioengineering, a professional doctoral program in biology and medicine, as well as doctoral programs in the secondary disciplines of biochemical engineering and chemical biology.
Currently, the school has 72 full-time faculty members, including 23 professors, among whom are two recipients of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, one recipient of the Leading Talent of "Ten Thousand Plan", and 10 national young talents, along with 33 associate professors/senior engineers and three assistant professors. In recent years, the school has produced a series of high-level research achievements. Its undergraduate program in bioengineering was rated A+ in the Soft Science Ranking of Chinese Universities, while Biology & Biochemistry and Plant & Animal Science consistently rank in the top 1% globally by ESI, with Agricultural Science newly entering the top 1% in 2024. The school locates in a newly constructed 16,000 m2 building with state-of-the-art facilities. Its Bioanalysis and Testing Center, equipped with four major platforms—"Biomolecule Qualitative and Quantitative Analysis," "Multifunctional Cell Analysis," "Biological Tissue Analysis and In Vivo Experimentation," and "Biomaterial Preparation and Performance Characterization"—represents an investment of nearly 100 million RMB and serves as a critical foundation for cutting-edge research.
