A masters or doctorate degree in a field related to social science or data science.
Position Summary
The Center for the Study of Global Issues (GLOBIS) is seeking a high-achieving, detail-oriented researcher to support the Center's Human Rights Research and Education programs. In particular, this position will focus on the collection, production, distribution, and maintenance of data associated with the Human Rights Measurement Initiative (HRMI), while taking part in HRMI research projects and other HRMI-related tasks. The ideal candidate is someone who has well-developed data science methodology skills and is interested in meaningful work in human rights. The successful applicant will need to be a strong communicator, poised under pressure, and comfortable working using their initiative and managing their own workload.
The individual will report to the Director of GLOBIS and will be part of the overall GLOBIS and HRMI project teams.
This position has a limited appointment term, which is expected to end December 31, 2026. The position may be extended beyond the initial term, contingent upon continued funding.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies
- Background in social science and/or statistics
- Knowledge in the areas of international human rights and/or criminology
- Ability to work with statistical packages and languages, like Stata, R, and/or Python
- Experience with survey design, Bayesian statistics, text scraping, measurement models, and/or machine learning
- Experience in securing and implementing grants and/or contracts
- Experience with project management
- Ability to handle many tasks at a time
- Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality and discretion while exhibiting integrity and trustworthiness with sensitive information
- Willingness to work with a globally dispersed team and to periodically work outside of typical working hours to meet with partners in other time zones
- Mature, professional, and reliable

GLOBIS Human Rights Research & Education Support
- Collaborate with GLOBIS faculty & staff, as well as partners worldwide, to collect and produce HRMI data.
- Collaborate with GLOBIS faculty & staff, as well as partners worldwide, to disseminate and promote human rights research conducted at GLOBIS and HRMI.
- Collaborate with GLOBIS faculty & staff, as well as partners worldwide, on website development.
- Serve as a representative of GLOBIS and the wider HRMI project at workshops, conferences, invited talks, and other events.
- Participate in meetings, co-design sessions, testing sessions, and other collaborative spaces with partners worldwide.
- Collaborate with GLOBIS faculty & staff, as well as partners worldwide, to produce original human rights research relying on cutting-edge data science and computational methodologies.
- Support the activities of the GLOBIS Human Rights Research Lab with guidance and expertise.
- Serve as a mentor to graduate and undergraduate students with overlapping interests.
Support and participate in experiential learning activities with students.
Center Development
- In consultation with the SPIA Grants Coordinator and GLOBIS faculty & staff, identify and secure new contracts, grants, and/or cooperative agreements that serve to support and expand GLOBIS' Human Rights Research & Education programs.
- Prepare and deliver proposals, presentations, and other materials to GLOBIS faculty & staff, the SPIA Grants Coordinator, and/or the SPIA's Development and Alumni Relations offices for use with potential donors.
- Advise SPIA and GLOBIS faculty and staff on development of overall grants and fundraising strategy for engaging new potential sources of funding.
