Company History
Founded in 1890, Illinois Tech was born different. It was built on the promise outlined in Minister Frank Wakely Gunsaulus’ “Million Dollar Sermon” to provide access to higher education for students from all different backgrounds and to make a difference in the world through technology-oriented education. In 1926, Lewis Institute formed a Department of Business and Economics and in 1940 merged with Armour Institute to become Illinois Institute of Technology. Department of Business and Economics ultimately grew into a separate school within Illinois Tech—Stuart School of Business—in 1969, with a gift from Lewis Institute alumnus and renowned financier Harold L. Stuart. Stuart himself was a national leader in the field of investment banking in the first half of the twentieth century, and his Chicago investment bank played a pivotal role in establishing the city as a global financial hub.
Illinois Tech's guiding mission and purpose —where students, including those underrepresented in technology, could prepare for meaningful roles in a changing industrial society and achieve professional and economic advancement —remains just as relevant today. The Carnegie Foundation designated Illinois Tech an “Opportunity College and University,” alongside only 16% of U.S. higher education institutions, and one of only five institutions in the country focused on technology, engineering, and the sciences to achieve this prestigious recognition. Illinois Tech graduates enjoy the highest eight-year median earnings and earnings ratio among all institutions in the State of Illinois.
